Explorer Software Celebrates 30th Anniversary

The privately held company was founded in 1984 by Jim McFarlane, who still owns the company today. “I’ve always had a passion for helping people and for business,” explains Mr. McFarlane. “After working in construction early in my career, I saw a real need for industry specific software – so I took a chance and started Explorer. I’ve never looked back.”
Unafraid of new ideas and technology, Mr. McFarlane was an early adopter of the virtual business model - implementing telecommuting in 1997 to allow Explorer to hire the best employees available, regardless of location. This visionary attitude and drive to innovate, has served Explorer well. The company was one of the first to offer a browser-based construction management solution, unveiling Contract Manger Version 7 in 2009. Last year, they delivered two completely re-designed modules - Business Analytics and DocPro - which have cemented Explorer’s reputation for innovative, intuitive software solutions. DocPro is a powerful document management system which reads and store images using Optical Character Recognition, so users can simply type a few words related to what they’re looking for to locate documents, eliminating the need to remember keywords. The Business Analytics modules is a user-friendly tool which allows users to select, sort, filter, group, and graph data easily. Other products require users to have a detailed understanding of the database or extensive training in report writing to achieve the same results.
Over the years, Explorer Software has grown through a combination of organic growth and acquisition, completing more than a dozen acquisitions in the last decade, including the acquisition of Computer Guidance Corporation earlier this year.
