New York City Event Highlights Positive Outcome of Trade Agreement for Peruvian Textile and Food Industries in the U.S.
To honor the 5th anniversary of the implementation of the Peru-United States Trade Promotion Agreement, PromPeru, the Peruvian Tourism and Export Board, will host Expo Peru, today in New York City. The inaugural tradeshow will showcase the commerce, culture and gastronomy that make up Peru’s contemporary and modern image presenting multi-sector Peruvian companies from agribusiness, clothing and diverse manufacturing to generate business and investment opportunities in the U.S.
Magali Silva Velarde-Alvarez, Peruvian Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism will host the all-day event at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 West 18th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues), presiding over a textile industry forum breakfast, a food business forum and an exclusive fashion show, Peru Moda in the evening.
According to the World Economic Forum, Peru is one of the countries with the world’s most business-friendly environments and ranks among the top 20 in the macroeconomic environment pillar. In recent years, the Peruvian economy has outperformed most emerging markets, growing at a fast pace of around six percent, with inflation below three percent. Expo Perú is the first of its kind initiative in the U.S. to reinforce Peru’s international reputation as an attractive country for investment opportunities, positioning the country as a supplier of quality products and services in both the textile and agronomic sector.
On November 17th and 18th, Peruvian delegates and companies visited buyers in the Tri-State area at their facilities and distribution channels to discuss the impact of trade agreement on their manufacturing and supply operations and discussed the positive economic forecast for Peruvian textile and food exports to the U.S.
The textile industry breakfast forum, moderated by Tom Julian, Director of Strategic Business Development at The Doneger Group, will host over 30 brands, designers and sourcing companies attending from the apparel industry, mainly in cotton, alpaca, and knit. Designer Mara Hoffman and Mark Neumann of Limited brands will also speak on the panel.
The Minister will officially open the exhibition floors at 10am giving hundreds of buyers from the U.S. and Canada the opportunity to meet textile and agribusiness manufacturers and create valuable B2B relationships.
A lunchtime forum, with keynote presenter, Bob Gellert of Atalanta Corporation, one of the largest importers of Peruvian ingredients for food service and retail in the U.S., will focus on the superlative quality of ingredients such as asparagus, artichokes, peppers and avocados, and the growth potential for these food products on the U.S. market. Kevin McDonnell, Chief Operating Officer of Fairway and Chef Victor Albisu of Del Campo in Washington, D.C. which was named Best New Restaurant by Esquire magazine in 2013, will also present.
An evening cocktail reception, Peru Mucho Gusto will kick off the Expo’s main attraction, Peru Moda, an exclusive fashion show featuring Peruvian fashion designers, Art Atlas, Jorge Salinas and Sergio Davila who stunned at NYC Fashion Week this year with his men’s collections featuring designs from alpaca and pima cotton.
