EYVIND EARLE: AN ORIGINAL AMERICAN MASTER
Elverhøj will open a new art exhibition November 15 featuring Eyvind Earle, An Original American Master. This California artist, author and illustrator is noted for his landscape painting and contribution to the background illustration and styling of classic Disney animated films.
The exhibit will offer a first look at oil paintings that hung in the artist’s home, never before seen by the public and rare serigraphs. This is a special opportunity for collectors as many of the works will be available for purchase.
You are invited to the Opening Reception on Saturday, November 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. Wine and refreshments will be served. There is no charge for admission.
Eyvind Earle (1916-2000) was born in New York but raised in Hollywood. An accomplished artist from an early age, he landed a job as an assistant sketch artist for United Artists while still in his teens. By the early 1950s, he was working as a background painter for Walt Disney Studios, where he contributed to the classic animated feature films Sleeping Beauty and Lady and the Tramp. Concurrently with his work in film and, later, in television, he was achieving even greater recognition for his personal work in fine art. From his first New York City solo show in 1938 until his death in July 2000, Earle exhibited regularly at prestigious galleries and museums across the United States.
For a ten year period between 1968-1978, Earle resided in Solvang. He found inspiration in the natural beauty of the area, as is evident in the many artworks depicting Santa Ynez Valley and Central Coast locations.
Eyvind Earle had a totally original perception of landscape. He successfully synthesizes seemingly in-congruent aspects into a singularly distinctive style: a style, which is at once mysterious, primitive, disciplined, moody and nostalgic. His landscapes are remarkable for their suggestion of distances, landmasses and weather moods. “For 70 years,” Earle wrote in 1996, “I’ve painted paintings, and I’m constantly and everlastingly overwhelmed at the stupendous infinity of Nature. Wherever I turn and look, there I see creation. Art is creating.... Art is the search for truth.”
