F.A. Davis Announces 2017 Winners of Undergraduate & Graduate Nursing Scholarships
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) September 15, 2017 -- F.A. Davis is delighted to announce the winner of its third annual undergraduate scholarship and the winner of its second annual graduate nursing scholarship. Awards of $1,500.00 will be made to José Guevara, a BSN student at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, and to Darcy Alimenti, a MSN student in an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Palliative Care Minor program at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
José is the first in his family to attend college. He found his passion for serving diverse, underserved populations while volunteering as a HIV/AIDS rapid tester for NovaSalud in Virginia,. After he completes his BSN degree, José plans to pursue a Nurse Practitioner’s degree, specializing in cardiac progressive care or pulmonary care. He is excited by the day-to-day opportunities nurses have to combine head and heart to meet intellectual, emotional, and physical challenges; and to empower, advocate for, and inspire hope in their patients. José’s ambition is to become a truly culturally competent healthcare practitioner who specializes in working with Latino and immigrant communities.
In his application essay, Mr. Guevara described the impact he hopes to have after he earns his degree. “I have seen how individuals, families and communities who have not had access to quality healthcare have suffered. Patient advocating can be a powerful equalizing force for minorities, such as myself, who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. My goal is quality improvement by demonstrating the effectiveness of nurses in delivering culturally competent care with the intention of improving the health of underserved populations.”
“I will be an advocate for my patients. I will be armed with the skills necessary to overcome the suffering associated with illness. I will be at the forefront of goals of care conversations,” is just one passage of Darcy Alimenti’s essay that stands out. Darcy views compassionate patient care as one of the most important aspects of the nursing profession. She is committed to helping patients to understand their prognoses and to achieve a quality of life that matches their own values. After her mother was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma, Darcy began to learn the value of life and the vulnerability of well-being, setting her on a path that recognizes the significance of patient care. “My skills and knowledge will ensure that patients are provided compassionate care throughout the trajectory of their illness. With each bump along the journey, I will help them understand their prognosis and help them achieve a quality of life that matches their desires. I will be the reminder that when curing isn’t possible, caring will prevail.” Darcy closes her essay with these inspiring words which encapsulate her passion and exemplifies her dedication to always provide the utmost care.
“We received 7,293 applications from undergraduate and graduate nursing students, far exceeding all of our expectations,” said Jean Rodenberger, Editor-in-Chief, Nursing. “Our applicant pool was extremely diverse. Our undergraduate applicants encompassed traditional college freshmen and non-traditional students returning to school. The graduate students, too, represented a vast range of backgrounds and goals. Selecting the winners were difficult decisions, but Mr. Guevara and Ms. Alimenti in their applications and essays demonstrated the very special nature of those who have chosen to be nurses. Their stories are inspiring to all of us. With Mr. Guevara and Ms. Alimenti leading the way, the future of nursing looks bright as a new generation of dedicated students embarks on the challenging yet rewarding path of becoming a nurse.”
With so many exemplary applications submitted, F.A. Davis is also excited to announce that this year they will also be awarding four runners-up with $100 gift cards and a free copy of one of their sponsoring titles.
