About the Authors
Janice J. Hoffman, PhD, RN, ANEF, is a Professor and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at George Washington University’s School of Nursing in Washington, D.C. With over 38 years of nursing experience, Dr. Hoffman has taught in baccalaureate, graduate, associate and diploma nursing programs, as well as serving in staff development positions in acute care and military facilities. She has been recognized for her dedication to excellence in teaching as a Fellow in the Academy of Nursing Education as well as a Fellow in the Leadership for Academic Nursing Program of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
Previously, she was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Missouri. An experienced academic administrator, she has also held positions as the assistant dean of the BSN program and the vice chair of Organizational Systems and Adult Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Hoffman’s areas of expertise include academic acute care nursing, new graduate transition, preceptor development and clinical decision making. Her work related to New Graduate Nurse Transition included serving as the director for the design and implementation of The Johns Hopkins Hospital’s SPRING Program, as well as the implementation of a residency program at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Hoffman was selected to serve on the panel that developed the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Practice Transition Accreditation Program and has served on the Advisory Boards for several acute care hospitals’ Nurse Residency Programs. She is a retired United States Navy Nurse Corps Captain.
Nancy J. Sullivan, DNP, RN, is Assistant Professor and Clinical Simulation Director; Acute and Chronic Care Instructor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and Clinical Nurse Specialist, Care Coordination/Readmission Initiative, The Johns Hopkins Hospital Joint Appointment with the School of Nursing, Baltimore, MD. She has been recognized for her dedication to excellence in teaching through the 2015 NLN Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators and the Nu Beta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.
Dr. Sullivan’s nursing experiences encompass emergency department/trauma/critical care of both adult and pediatric patients, nursing management, a nurse educator role working with new graduate nurses, and a clinical nurse specialist role focusing on care coordination and readmission reduction. Her current research focuses on the use of simulation in nursing education—both in academia and practice. In practice, her research focuses on improving the nursing response in the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest using rapid-cycle deliberate practice simulation. In academia, the focus is on comparing the simulation and clinical environments with goals of informing an appropriate clinical-to-simulation ratio and designing the best use of clinical time to meet students' needs. Dr. Sullivan was a member of the 2015 NLN Simulation Leader cohort and worked with the American Heart Association on a project exploring the best educational strategies for maintaining CPR competencies. She publishes and presents locally, nationally, and internationally on simulation and resuscitation training.
