(ICI), through its F&D Reports division and sister company FDARMS, has released the annual update of its “Top 65 Retail Grocery Rankings” report, which positions the top retailers by annual grocery sales and offers direct access to each company’s payment score and trend.
Overall sales and store growth in the grocery sector have been somewhat stagnant over the past few years, with consumers remaining price-sensitive and a number of traditional operators (Safeway, Delhaize, Supervalu) trimming store counts. This has been due, at least in part, to an increasing number of alternative-format competitors, including discount grocers, mass merchandisers, dollar stores, limited-assortment chains, and higher-end retailers. The Top 65 report offers insight into how the industry players stack up against their direct competitors for the consumers’ food dollars. Additional highlights include each company’s total annual sales, domestic store count, operating area and ARMS Payment Score (APS).
Commenting on the report, Lawrence Sarf, CEO of ICI, stated, “The term ‘traditional grocer’ used to represent where 90% of all consumables were purchased; that is certainly no longer the case, with alternate formats capturing a growing share year after year. The consumer is buying shampoo and milk at the dollar store, bread and a prescription at the corner drug store, and steaks for the grill at the mass merchandiser. In other words, there’s nothing traditional about how groceries are sold today, and there’s nothing to suggest any reversal of that trend. To the contrary, supermarkets have added fuel stations and are now often selling furniture and small appliances. We have taken the top sellers of grocery items, wherever possible removing non-food sales, and rank-ordered the Top 65. Two of the top four are mass merchants, and perhaps even more surprising is a dollar store cracking the top 10. This ready reference is a must-have for anyone that does business in this segment.”
