This will be a key opportunity for SMEs to engage with the EU in light of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations. In addition to private sector business stake holders, in attendance will be US government officials from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Department of Commerce, Small Business Administration, and the European government officials representing the EU's Directorate-General for Trade and Directorate-General for Enterprise.
“The U.S.-EU Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Conferences were launched in 2011 in Brussels and Washington under the auspices of the Transatlantic Economic Council, with the goal of enhancing trade and investment opportunities for U.S. and EU SMEs… Small businesses are the engines of economic growth and job creation on both sides of the Atlantic, yet they face a number of challenges that can inhibit their ability to engage in international trade. These meetings launched an ongoing dialogue between the United States and the EU, aimed at developing cooperative initiatives to enhance small business participation in transatlantic trade, tackle trade barriers faced by SMEs in foreign markets, and exchange best practices on other policies of interest to small business, such as entrepreneurship and financing,” according to the USTR’s official website. Previous conference alternated between Washington, DC and Rome, Italy.
The Transatlantic Economic Council, under which this US-EU conference for small business is convened, “…brings together senior policy makers and regulators from the United States and EU to focus on deepening our transatlantic relationship to promote innovation, addressing non-tariff barriers to trade through increased regulatory cooperation, and jointly exploring global economic challenges. The TEC focuses on the roles that transatlantic cooperation and innovation can play in reducing barriers to trade and improving economic growth in the two economies, including creating opportunities for small businesses. The TEC is a process characterized by multiple cooperative activities throughout the year with frequent contacts at every level,” according to the USTR’s official event page.
