Family Night Offers Help to Families of those Struggling with Addiction
Fort Lauderdale, Florida (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 -- Cornerstone Recovery Center in Fort Lauderdale will be hosting two Family Night events in August. The first Family Night event will take place on Friday, August 1, 2014 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm and the second Family night event will take place on Friday, August 15, 2014 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Family Night is open to family members and loved ones of those who are currently in Cornerstone’s addiction recovery programs; it is also open to the public.
Cornerstone hopes that opening the event up to the public will allow anyone who is dealing with a loved one struggling with addiction can come in, learn, share, and connect with other parents and family members going through the same thing. The professionals and staff at Cornerstone believe that addiction is a disease that affects the entire family. Based on this philosophy, Family Night events were started earlier this year and they have been very successful in helping family members facing the hardships of dealing with a loved one addicted to alcohol or drugs. The recovery center has received excellent feedback from those who have participated in the community and healing process that is Family Night.
Thankful Family Members Learn, Connect, and Support Each Other
The last Family Night event was on Friday, July 18, 2014 and all participants were fully engaged and showed one another a great deal of support throughout the entire night. Members in attendance included some people in recovery themselves and family members of loved ones who have co-occurring disorders. (Co-occurring disorders mean that a client is diagnosed with substance abuse problems or addiction as well as another diagnosis, such as a mental health issues or post-traumatic stress disorder.)
Everyone in attendance offered very useful perspectives to one another and shared personal experiences. The group members who are in recovery described their experiences with their own families, giving the other participants a look into the family dynamics from an addict’s perspective. This exchange allowed the family members in attendance to gain empathy for and knowledge about their loved ones’ struggles. The different perspective from outside their own family created a dialogue that may allow them to see beyond their own frustrations. “I am thankful to hear what people in recovery thought about enabling and how it affected their path to sobriety,” stated one attendee. Many questions were asked, opinions were shared, and all participants left feeling valued.
Other topics of discussion during the Family Night event included:
• 12 step fellowship involvement
• Enabling
• Self-Care
• Codependency
• Local Halfway House Locations
Families of Addicts Gain New Perspectives and Insights
One of the main benefits of Family Night is to show family members that they are not alone; however, in opening the dialog of communication, many learn much more. Being able to witness the dynamics of other families and how having a loved one struggling with addiction affects others gives a unique change of perspective. During the Family Night group discussions, participants have a chance to learn, share, and heal together. The group format allows each person to share their family’s story if they choose, or just listen, learn, and lean on others for support. Attendees are very appreciative of the free group event that is facilitated by Cornerstone’s addiction recovery therapist Barbara Hernandez, MS, LMHC. One attendee stated: “This group helps me so much, I am so grateful I am still able to attend this group even after my loved one has completed treatment with Cornerstone Recovery Center.”
In addition to holding Family Night events twice a month, Cornerstone Recovery Center has started to offer events for alumnus with a special focus on relapse prevention and maintenance. Cornerstone’s next Alumni Event will be a brunch on Sunday, August 10, 2014. Brunch begins at 1pm and there will be a guest speaker from 2pm to 3pm.
