Jamestown, ND (PRWEB) June 01, 2015 -- Farmers Union Insurance, along with the North Dakota Farmers Union, has given $150,000 in grant funds donated from a challenge to the Jamestown Regional Medical Center. This one-time donation was made on May 12, 2015, to help give back to the community by establishing an oncology unit in Jamestown, especially to help provide chemotherapy infusions to patients.
The board at Farmers Union Insurance approved the idea to donate to the Jamestown Regional Medical Center because of its location. The medical center and Farmers Union Insurance Company's corporate headquarters are both located in the same town.
"Building stronger communities is core to the mission of Farmers Union Insurance," noted Mark Anderson, general manager of Farmers Union Insurance. "The oncology services that will be provided in this clinic will be vital to the health and well-being of the entire region."
The Jamestown Regional Medical Center currently serves a nine-county region around Jamestown. So far, the response to the center's new oncology unit has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Anderson, and is in keeping with the goal of Farmers Union Insurance to help rural America in any way possible.
North Dakota Farmers Union President Mark Watne agrees with the mission of Farmers Union Insurance. He referred to a "great need" to provide cancer treatments to residents in the Jamestown area, so patients wouldn't have to drive to other cities like Fargo or Bismarck.
K.C. DeBoer, president and CEO of Jamestown Regional Medical Center, said the grant from Farmers Union Insurance will get the project started in its first phase of development. The first tasks will be to customize the current clinic space with rooms for care along with providing the center with the necessary tools to begin these oncology treatments.
The medical center said that it plans for the clinic to begin taking patients by this winter. Once the unit becomes operational, an oncologist and full-time nurse practitioner will oversee patients, said DeBoer.
DeBoer and the rest of the staff at Jamestown Regional Medical Center are reportedly thrilled with the opportunity to help serve more patients locally. The generous donation from Farmers Union Insurance and the North Dakota Farmers Union will help keep oncology and chemotherapy services in Jamestown, which is part of the center's goal.
