Fashion Students Turn Thrift Store Finds Into Celeb-Inspired Prom Dresses
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 15, 2014 -- This year, FashionClub.com challenged six FIDM Fashion Design students to source a thrift store gown and redesign it into a prom look for 2014. The student designers had to choose a celebrity as their muse to inspire their recreation. With a small budget and a few weeks to finish the project, the students worked on their upcycled designs, which were then featured on FashionClub.com, a website sponsored by the fashion college FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.
“At first glance, it seems like it would be easier since you are starting with a finished garment, but if anything that’s where the real challenge is,” explains Erica Rae Williams, who chose songstress Lana del Rey as her celebrity muse. “As a designer, I'm used to starting from scratch, choosing the fabric, creating each pattern piece to best achieve my design, but when working with a finished garment, it almost tells you what to do – you have limitations and have to flexible.” Erica’s finished piece is a romantic lavender floor-length chiffon dress overlaid with a black Chantilly lace bodice.
FashionClub.com’s Art Director Harriet Grant met with the designers throughout all phases of the project to go over ideas, sketches, model selection, and fittings. During a photo shoot at McCadden Space Studio in Los Angeles, the students were able to collaborate with photographers, hair and makeup artists, and art directors. Fashion Design and Business Management student Stephanie Wong, who thrifted her dress from a local vintage boutique, says, “I loved being able to use my design aesthetic to create a dress that would fit Emma Stone’s style. It was such a great experience to see my own work being styled and photographed and I loved it.”
