Fastlane International asks ‘Is it really Father’s Day this weekend?’

‘The good news,’ continues David, ‘is that there’s plenty of time for Australian and New Zealand ex-pats, Father’s Day is not till September there, and many Scandinavian countries don’t celebrate it until November.’
David observes Germany’s Father’s Day sounds most ‘Dad-ish’: ‘It’s held on Ascension Day and fathers march round town pulling little carts loaded with beer.’
Why the different dates? Explains David: ‘The US started celebrating Father’s Day in 1910 when Sonora Smart Dodd heard a sermon about Mother’s Day and decided her dad, a Civil War veteran and single parent, should be equally honoured. The third Sunday of June was chosen for the simple reason it was the first Sunday near her dad’s birthday her Minister could organize! Other countries quickly adopted the new tradition; but unfortunately for us forgetful offspring, many chose different dates to tie in with their Founder’s day or religious celebrations.’
