Part 1 – Preventive Controls for Human and Animal Food
Most manufacturers required to register with the FDA as a food facility must now create a specific written food safety plan.
Major steps in the plan include conducting a hazard analysis and designing preventive controls. To allow flexibility for a manufacturer to design a safety plan which meets the unique needs of both its food product and facility, the rule is left intentionally vague — in fact, the FDA has declined to provide a sample plan.
During this presentation attendees will learn:
• The FDA’s “Seven Pillars” and the schedule for their implementation
• What a food safety plan must include
• Who is a preventative controls qualified individual
Depending on the size of a business, there may have less than a year left to comply with these rules. The smallest businesses (less than $1 million in sales annually) and those subject to the pasteurized milk ordinance have three years from the release of the regulations. Businesses with fewer than 500 full-time employees have two years; anyone larger has only one.
Part 2 – Foreign Supplier Verification Program and Accredited Third-Party Certification
The final rule requires that importers perform certain risk-based activities to verify that food imported into the U.S. has been produced in a manner that meets applicable safety standards.
During part 2 attendees will learn:
• The two chief purposes of Accredited Third-Party Certification
• How the size of a business affects compliance deadlines
Depending on several factors, businesses may have just over a year left to comply with the FSVP. If a company is affected by the supply chain preventive controls rule mentioned in Part 1, the date for compliance with the FSVP is the same. If a business imports from a supplier affected by that rule, the date is six months after theirs. Otherwise, companies have 18 months from the November publication of these rules.
