Mental Health Care in a Turbulent Environment*
Dr. Herbert Pardes, Executive Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, New York-Presbyterian, The University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell
Dr. Pardes reached out to the New York Times in support of the White House National Conference on Mental Health (June 2013); which intended to launch a national conversation to increase understanding and awareness about mental health. The conference brought together people from across the country to discuss working together to reduce the stigma and help those struggling with mental health problems to recognize the importance of reaching out for assistance. With a vast background in the field, Dr. Pardes urged the country to put mental health on our top-priority list and to encourage the most creative thinking in reducing the shame and providing the care and support needed.
Learn how mental health priorities will impact your field of practice.
Don’t miss this innovative session that will:
• Review the current state of mental health care
• Articulate both challenges and forces (e.g. PTSD, gun violence, cost of comorbidity) driving the need for change in mental health
• Discuss innovations and potential avenues for cost control and improved quality in mental health care
- Topics are tentative and subject to change.
Dr. Herbert Pardes is formerly President and CEO of New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System. A noted psychiatrist, he served as Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and the United States Assistant Surgeon General during the Carter and Reagan Administrations. He was also President of the American Psychiatric Association and served as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Vice President for Health Sciences.
