Fentanyl is an extremely powerful opioid painkiller—about 80-100 times more potent than morphine. Fentanyl patches are sold under the brand name Duragesic. When patients who are taking CNS depressant medications are treated with fentanyl, they are at risk of suffering a combined drug overdose due to the interaction of fentanyl with other prescriptions.
The FDA safety alert also warned about the risk of death from accidental overdoses caused by the side effects of fentanyl. Doctors who prescribe fentanyl products to patients who are not eligible to take the drug, or who prescribe fentanyl to patients who are taking medications that could lead to a combined drug overdose, may be putting their health—and even their lives—at risk.
