FHI 360 Appoints Dr. Timothy Mastro to Chief Science Officer
Durham, NC (PRWEB) August 01, 2016 -- FHI 360, a global, nonprofit human development organization headquartered in Durham, NC, announced today the appointment of Timothy Mastro, MD, DTM&H, to serve as Chief Science Officer. Research and science are the foundation upon which FHI 360 was built. The organization’s commitment to the science of improving lives remains a key element of its service to the global development community.
“Since joining FHI 360 in 2008, after 20 years in scientific leadership positions at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Tim has led our global research and technical work across a broad range of health, population and nutrition areas,” said Patrick Fine, Chief Executive Officer of FHI 360. “Given that his scientific rigor and strong leadership have had a notable impact both at FHI 360 and in the global health community, Tim’s appointment to Chief Science Officer is a natural progression of his experience and record as a distinguished scientist, as well as his knowledge and commitment to FHI 360.”
Activities under Mastro’s leadership for the past eight years at the organization include global health research, global health programs, program sciences and technical support, nutrition and food security, contraceptive technology innovation and science facilitation.
Prior to joining FHI 360 in 2008, Mastro’s research and work in programs at the CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Global AIDS Program addressed the prevention and treatment of HIV, sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis. Mastro first joined CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer. From 1993 to 2000, he served in Bangkok as director of the CDC-Thai Ministry of Public Health HIV/AIDS Collaboration. Mastro began his international public health career on the Thai-Cambodian border in 1983, where he served as a physician and medical coordinator of the United Nations Border Relief Operation through 1985.
Mastro has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Colgate University and a Doctor of Medicine from Saint Louis University. He trained in internal medicine at New York City’s Metropolitan Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He studied at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and received a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Royal College of Physicians of London. Mastro is board certified in internal medicine, a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Epidemiological Society. He is also Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mastro received numerous awards at CDC and is the author or co-author of more than 160 published articles and book chapters.
