Fiction Proves More Popular than Self-help in List of Books That Changed People's Lives
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 10 February 2016 -- Members of the public were asked to name a book that had changed their life as part of the Changing Minds Festival over the weekend that took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
The festival was an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the health benefits of the arts. Events on offer included a Gong Bath, Tai Chi, and the opportunity to meet with a whole host of organisations offering mental health support centred on the arts. The event was also attended by Luciana Berger, the Shadow Minister for Mental Health.
The books named by visitors ranged from the novella Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry to the Dickens classic Great expectations, published in 1865, which was the oldest book on the list. Over half of the list was made up of fiction titles and the most popular titles were the Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and JK Rowling's Harry Potter series.
In Non-fiction, Eckhart Tolle's the Power of Now proved popular and the list also featured numerous autobiographies including Malcolm X, and Rachel Brathen's recently published Yoga Girl. Two thirds of the books chosen were published after 1980 and 40% after 2000.
The poll was carried out by the online bibliotherapy provider biblio.life who match readers to life-changing books via their team of empathetic curators, which includes librarians, authors, and booksellers. The service offers users personalised reading recommendations chosen to improve their wellbeing and is available on a pay-what-you want basis until 31 March.
Kate Lomax, co-founder comments: “We have been overwhelmed with the interest from visitors at this fantastic event. The diversity of the responses reinforces our view that when it comes to books that make a difference, there is no one-size-fits-all and our community of curators reflect the diversity we think is vital to help people find books that will offer them a fresh perspective on life."
