Financial Industry Adds 18,000 Jobs in January
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 29, 2016 -- The financial industry gained 18,000 jobs for the month of January, according to the latest employment numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday, February 5, 2016.
The Economic Situation report revealed a growth of 0.22 percent in the number of employed persons within the financial activities supersector for the month of January, increasing from 8,192,000 jobs in December 2015 to 8,210,000 jobs in January 2016. Unemployment for the supersector now sits at 3.1 percent for the month, a 0.5 percent increase over December’s rate of 2.6 percent.
Within the supersector, the finance and insurance sector accounted for 63 percent of job growth last month with 11,400 jobs created. Credit intermediation and related activities gained 7,000 jobs while insurance carriers and related activities gained 4,100 jobs. The real estate, rental and leasing sector gained 6,800 jobs; with real estate accounting for 4,500 jobs, and rental, and leasing services accounting for 2,300 jobs.
Across the supersector, average hourly earnings for the month increased to $32.19 from $31.88 last month. Average weekly hours slightly increased to 37.7 from 37.6 last month.
Total nonfarm payroll employment across all industries increased by 151,000 in January while the unemployment rate changed little at 4.9 percent. Over the last 12 months, the number of unemployed persons and the unemployment rate were down by 1.1 million and 0.8 percentage point, respectively. Retail trade, food services and drinking places, health care, and manufacturing all experienced gains last month.
