First Class of Physician Residents Arrive at Novant Health Family Medicine Residency Clinic
(PRWEB) July 06, 2016 -- The first class of resident physicians begins its three-year extensive training in family medicine at the Novant Health Family Medicine Residency Clinic in Cornelius, North Carolina. The class of four female and two male providers will complete the training with rotations in community clinics as well as at Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center, Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center and Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital.
The Novant Health residency program team created the patient-centered curriculum to develop practitioners who are committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for all members of the family.
The focus on family practice will help address an anticipated short fall in primary care physicians. Currently, there are 2,800 family physicians in North Carolina with a projected need of 4,700 by 2020, according to the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians Foundation.
“The need for well-trained family physicians is critical to our state and our nation, and the continuity of care that primary care doctors provide to patients is essential,” said Dr. Mark Higdon, Novant Health vice president and program director of the residency program. “We are excited to have developed a Family Medicine Residency Program within the culture and walls of Novant Health.”
Novant Health family medicine residents will be part of an integrated team that includes other providers, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians, health coaches and referral coordinators. The team will partner with patients to promote wellness and preventive care while also managing existing conditions to slow or reverse the progression of disease.
“Much of care is fragmented today. Our goal is to train young physicians that will see patients from cradle to grave,” said Higdon. “By teaching teamwork, evidence-based medicine, collaboration within a health care system, innovation and leadership, our physicians will be equipped to deliver remarkable care.”
The Novant Health Family Medicine Residency Clinic has been several years in the making. Since the signing of an official statement of commitment letter Feb. 20, 2014, by Carl Armato, president and CEO of Novant Health, Novant Health has been working to expand its capabilities into the world of formal graduate medical education training.
Novant Health received a notice of accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Oct. 23, 2015. It was also granted accreditation from the American Osteopathic Association in November 2014. This gives Novant Health dual accreditation to train family medicine residents who have graduated from M.D. and D.O. medical schools.
