First Clinical Study of Oblique Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion by Dr. Hamid Abbasi Published in the National Health Institute Index
(PRWEB) January 18, 2016 -- Tristate Brain and Spine Institute is pleased to announce that the first clinical study of oblique lateral lumbar interbody fusion (OLLIF), performed by Dr. Hamid Abbasi, was published in the National Institute of Health Index in December 2015. Dr. Abbasi’s study, “Oblique Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion (OLLIF): Technical Notes and Early Results of a Single Surgeon Comparative Study,” is the first to look at patient data, statistics and outcomes following the OLLIF procedure in comparison to the traditional open spinal fusion surgery that is still the standard procedure being performed by spine surgeons around the globe. Dr. Abbasi is among only a handful of surgeons in the United States who are performing the revolutionary OLLIF procedure, and by analyzing and comparing actual patient outcome, his study goes beyond backing up the theoretical science by quantifying the data from patients who have undergone the procedure.
The study found that the procedure can be completed in a minimally invasive approach. OLLIF can be performed using an incision no larger than a dime compared to more traditional procedures which include separation of the muscles and soft tissue which in turn can compound the possibility of complications following any surgical procedure. Dr. Abbasi’s findings, however, show that when compared with more traditional procedures, OLLIF drastically reduces hospitalization, surgery and recovery times, but blood loss is significantly decreased (from 355 ml lost, on average in traditional procedures, to 29 ml lost on average during OLLIF). Additionally, the study found that time before returning to work and the amount of time with restricted activity are severely decreased. According to Dr. Abbasi, these facts show that “OLLIF is a minimally invasive fusion that significantly reduces surgery times compared to open surgery and which overcomes the difficulties of traditional open fusions, making it a safe and technically less demanding surgery” than more traditional procedures.
In addition to having the results of this study published in the National Institute of Health Index, in November 2015, Dr. Abbasi presented the study at the Walter Dandy Neurological Conference in Dubai, UAE, and is now an internationally recognized speaker on the topic and benefits of the OLLIF procedure, which is yet another step in creating awareness of this minimally invasive and revolutionary surgery.
