First Ever “Olin Brass Family Day” Celebration a Point of Pride for Everyone

It’s quite another to get a heartfelt “You're welcome!” in return.
That’s the message Olin Brass heard loud and clear from the overflow crowd that flocked to the company’s complex in East Alton on Saturday, September 21st for Olin Brass Family Day 2013.
The event was conceived as a show of appreciation to employees for their efforts since 2007, when Global Brass & Copper, Inc. purchased the metals business from Olin Corporation and the Olin Brass subsidiary became the foundation of the new company.
An invitation issued to all staff members expressed the company’s gratitude for the invaluable contributions Olin Brass employees and their families have made to “the significant transformation of our operations and employee relations over the past six years.”
“The response was overwhelmingly positive,” Olin Brass Family Day Committee person Theresa Thomas said, noting that the event was attended by over 1,200 people, including 400 employees and their spouses, children and other family members.
For most, the highlight of the day was the chance to tour the three facilities that make up Olin Brass’s East Alton complex: the Casting Plant, the Fabricated Products and Cupping facility, and the historic Olin Brass Mill. Each is among the world’s best facilities of its kind, thanks to significant upgrades and enhancements that have been made in the last few years, making this an exciting opportunity indeed.
“I believe the last time plant tours were offered was at Olin Corporation’s centennial celebration, which was in 1992,” Thomas pointed out. “So for most employees, and certainly for their spouses and other family members, this was the first chance to see the entire operation. I think most of us were excited at the prospect. I know I was.”
Equally, if not more exciting, was the number of employee volunteers who turned out to help prepare and host the event. “It was amazing to see how many people were willing to take time out of their day and give up scheduled days off to help us plan and pull off this event,” Thomas said. “The pride they have in their workplace was simply bursting at the seams.”
Judging from the results of Family Day 2013, it seems like just about everyone at Olin Brass feels the same way. Proud of where they work, what they do, and who they are. Like a family.
