Yoga is far beyond the practice of postures or exercises as it is sometimes misunderstood in the western world. It is a combination of Yoga, Ayurveda & Tantra:
⦁ Yoga deals with the spirit and its harmonious relationship with the body & mind.
⦁ Ayurveda deals with the body and its harmony with the mind & spirit
⦁ Tantra deals mainly with the mind and its harmony with the body & spirit.
This may sound complicated, but it is very simple, and without this simple understanding much is missed. They cannot be separated and seen in isolation. Their combined web is a miracle, a dance and a celebration of our very existence on our planet.
However the study and practice of Yoga would be limited without further background knowledge to appreciate its complexities. The term ‘Yoga is very, very vast, almost infinite. Its usage in our modern world is only a minor component of Yoga, known as ‘Hatha Yoga’.
Some of the broadly accepted categories of Yoga according to classical treatises and their mastery leading to control are as follows.
1. Hatha Yoga – giving mastery over breath and leading to the control of the physical body and vitality.
2. Laya Yoga– giving mastery of the will and leading to the powers of the mind.
3. Bhakti Yoga – having faith in love and devotion and harnessing the power of divine love.
4. Shakti Yoga – having mastery over energy and the ability to utilize the energizing forces of nature.
5. Mantra Yoga– having mastery over sound and the ability to utilize the powers of sound vibration.
6. Yantra Yoga– having mastery over form and the ability to synthesize the powers of geometrical form.
7. Dhyana Yoga – having the mastery over thought and to possess the power of thought processes.
8. Raja Yoga– the mastery over method leading to powers of discrimination.
9. Jnana Yoga– the mastery over knowledge and cultivating the powers of the intellect.
10.Karma Yoga – the mastery over action leading to powers of limitless selfless action.
11. Kundalani Yoga– the mastery over psychic energy leading to control and powers of the psychic-nerve force.
12. Tantra Yoga – the mastery over sexual energy leading to the ability to harness the sexual energy into spiritual energy.
13. Samadhi Yoga– the mastery of one's self leading to the powers of ecstasy.
So now it is simple to comprehend that the Yogic system covers the entire field of our existence. From physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, sensory and far beyond into the highest stages of human development.
The union of body, mind & spirit is the union of Ayurveda, Yoga & Tantra. Their common foundation is the five Universal elements, Space, Air, Water, Fire and Earth. Their inter-dependency and inter-relationship on our life depends not only on the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, the thoughts we think and the indulgences we entertain, but also on where, when and how. They determine our physical health & state, mental & intellectual capacity, and emotional & psychic balance.
