Five Tips for a Healthy Winter from Kids’ Media Leader Adventure to Fitness
New York City, NY (PRWEB) January 22, 2014 -- The heart of winter may have arrived, but that doesn’t mean staying physically active and attending to overall wellness should suffer, says Adventure to Fitness, creators of the animated streaming exercise videos for kids in use by up to 10 million kids weekly.
Teachers use the kids’ workout routines frequently for indoor recess, in addition to “brain breaks,” or to integrate the academically-rich stories with their curricula lesson plans. Due to the overwhelming success of the school program in just 3 years, and the high demand from parents, a home program was introduced in 2013.
“As we look toward a long winter ahead, we think it’s important that teachers, parents, and kids remember they have just as many options to focus on health and fitness as during the summer,” said Michael Rhattigan, CEO of Adventure to Fitness. “With that in mind, we’ve put out five easy-to-follow recommendations to help kids around the country achieve their wellness goals.”
Tips for a Healthy Winter from Adventure to Fitness
1. Get at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. It’s ok if you miss a day; nobody is going to be perfect. But try to make up for it with 20 or 30 extra minutes the next day. If you’re short on ideas, here are some of our favorite winter activities.
2. Screen time will happen. It is the nature of spending more time inside during the winter. Try to make it productive with a “whitelist” of acceptable educational or interactive options. Use streaming kids’ fitness videos to get kids moving indoors.
3. Be conscious of temperature limits. Below 20 degrees is indoors-only weather. 20-30 degrees is acceptable for outdoor play, but kids must wear extra layers, gloves, hats, and come inside for warming breaks at least every 30 minutes. Above 30 degrees, dress warm and go wild!
4. Teach kids to be aware of winter hazards. Kids have less experience and are at greater risk for injury due to trips and falls. Show them how to sidestep slowly across slippery surfaces, or teach them to spot slush and black ice and avoid it altogether.
5. Germs go into a breeding frenzy in the winter because people spend a lot of time in warm, damp, close quarters. Make sure your child is up to date on all vaccinations, including the flu vaccine. Teach your child proper hand washing technique and require they wash several times daily.
