Fix the Debt Reacts to Senate Passage of the Continuing Resolution
Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 28, 2013 -- With a government shutdown looming, the U.S. Senate passed a bill to fund the government through November 15 on a 54-44 vote on Friday. The bill now heads back to the House where its fate is uncertain. According to Politico, there is not a clear path for Congress to bridge the divide between the two chambers and avoid a government shutdown on October 1.
The Campaign to Fix the Debt, a nonpartisan movement asking lawmakers to work together on legislation large enough to stabilize and reduce the national debt as a share of the economy, urged immediate action on the legislation as part of its increased lobbying efforts to fix the debt.
"The Campaign to Fix the Debt urges swift passage of legislation by both chambers to avert a government shutdown so that lawmakers can focus on the larger fiscal issues facing the country. The current political posturing is counterproductive and diverts attention from the country’s real fiscal challenges,” said Maya MacGuineas, who, in addition to leading the Campaign to Fix the Debt, is the President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a bipartisan organization focused on educating the public on issues related to fiscal policy.
“Instead of jumping from one manufactured crisis to the next, Members of Congress and the White House should focus on crafting a workable deal to improve the nation’s current plan to continue borrowing on an unsustainable track, and lift the debt ceiling to avoid a disastrous government default,” continued MacGuineas.
