Flakka Invades the Region of a South Florida Fort Lauderdale Elementary School
(PRWEB) June 28, 2015 -- According to the News Leader on June 23rd, the flakka problem in South Florida has reached the immediate area of a Fort Lauderdale elementary school. In Broward County a man was allegedly selling the addictive substance within 1,000 feet of the elementary school. The synthetic drug, Alpha-PVP, has become problematic on Florida’s streets; the substance is inexpensive, and distributed in large scale quantities. Harbor Village Detox is a Miami-Dade drug rehab dedicated to helping those with untreated drug and alcohol use disorders get treatment for the underlying causes of addiction. The treatment facility asserts raising awareness about flakka and the dangers of the substance is critical in preventing overdose deaths stemming from the substance.
According to the News Leader, flakka is banned, but not yet entirely illegal, due to constantly changing formulas made by the chemists who create the drug. The News Leader quotes Brian Sullivan, “One of the dangers of flakka is, you can reach a point of excited delirium, and your body temperature can reach 105 degrees. That explains why people are caught running around naked.”
An associate from Harbor Village Detox comments, “Flakka is more than the drug community’s problem. Its proliferation throughout the entire Broward community is being felt by more than the people who partake in its use. Someone was just accused of selling the drug a short distance away from an elementary school, and at $3-$5 a pop, the possibility of exposure for those kids is dangerously high. We need to create all-encompassing prevention and education programs for our youth, to ensure they know what the dangers of drug use are. It’s not enough to have a yearly conversation about addiction and then not revisit it again until next year.
“When there are epidemics, like heroin, or a growing problem like flakka in local communities educating students, parents, and the general public is critical for mitigation. The less cases we have the better, as treatment is costly, and is more difficult for teens and young adults, as compared to full grown patients.”
