Flint Water Crisis Dramatically Underscores Need for Water Systems Funding
Annapolis, MD (PRWEB) July 27, 2016 -- The resolution notes that in April 2014, the city of Flint, MI, began to use the Flint River as the water source for its residents and what followed was a tragedy for the people of that city. UA Local 370 in Flint spearheaded the response to the crisis, installing filters and fixtures in homes throughout the city so that the people would have safe drinking water.
The resolution, which will be debated and voted on by more than 3,000 delegates to the convention, goes on to note that “the issue with respect to lead contamination is only one aspect of a much larger problem with respect to our drinking water infrastructure, which is in serious need of repair and replacement.” Further, because “Federal, state and local governments have been slow to take action” in the face of the obvious dangers to public health, action is needed to address this problem and to develop effective solutions.
The UA has repeatedly called for a full investigation of the crisis and a wider effort to protect water systems all across North America. This resolution, if approved by the delegates, will further strengthen that position and calls for the work to be done by the skilled piping professionals of the UA.
