Florida Gov. Rick Scott Signs HB 751 The Emergency Treatment for Opioid Overdose Act into Law, Overdose Victims Get a Second Chance
Miami, Fl (PRWEB) June 11, 2015 -- The Emergency Treatment for Opioid Overdose act has been ratified by Governor Rick Scott yesterday, according to WCTV; the act grants access to healthcare professionals, firefighters, and approved authorities to opiate antagonists, like narcan and naloxone, to reverse the effects of potentially fatal opiate overdoses. An opiate overdose seizes the central nervous system and prevents victims from breathing- causing brain damage that is often permanent. Overdoses are commonly fatal among the united states. Scott has taken the initiative to give victims of overdose access to medications that will prevent death. Harbor Village Detox is a drug and alcohol treatment center in South Florida, with the hope the new act will promote treatment for those revived with opiate antagonists.
Harbor Village Detox provides affordable addiction care in Florida, and applauds the new bill’s potential to imprint a marked difference on the South Florida community riddled with addiction. The treatment center published a blog post about the bill before the law was approved by Scott. An associate from the Miami-Dade county heroin detox center comments, “We’ve been following this bill, crossing our fingers that it will pass, and we’re overjoyed that it finally has. Many don’t understand how critical overdoses truly are- even when addicts recover it can be difficult to get them to enroll into treatment. Some victims of overdose aren’t so lucky, and lose their lives before they’re able to consider treatment. The Emergency Treatment for Opioid Overdose Act gives addicts another life line to change their lives.
“When most people think of opiates, their minds immediately go to heroin, but people forget there are a slew of opiate medications like vicodin responsible for overdoses too. Other states who have implemented similar laws appear to be making a difference with access to opiate antagonists. I am hopeful Florida will do the same.”
