Florida Hospital Zephyrhills Delivers New Game-Changing Technology for Advanced Heart Failure Patients with Coronary Artery Disease
Zephyrhills, FL (PRWEB) September 30, 2015 -- Florida Hospital Zephyrhills is one of the first in the area to offer a protected heart procedure for advanced heart failure patients with coronary artery disease. Known as a Protected Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), the Impella 2.5, is the world’s smallest heart pump.
During a protected PCI procedure, the Impella 2.5 heart pump helps maintain a stable heart function by pumping blood for the heart. This gives a weak heart muscle an opportunity to rest and reduces the heart’s workload, preventing the heart from being overstressed by the procedure as coronary artery blockages are repaired. “With the Impella heart pump, we are able to offer our patients, whom otherwise were determined to be inoperable or non-candidates for stents and angioplasty, this life-saving procedure,” said Deborah Moore, RN, RCIS, Director of Interventional Cardiology at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills.
On September 24, Dr. Ketal Chauhan, a board certified Interventional Cardiologist, utilized the Impella heart pump to enable a patient with severe coronary artery disease to have stent placement to open the patients arteries and restore blood flow to the heart. “Without the Impella heart pump, my patient would not have qualified for the procedure,” said Dr. Chauhan. “Her heart was simply too weak to pump blood during the treatment process. The Impella heart pump made it possible for her to have this life-saving treatment.”
The Impella 2.5 recently received expanded FDA approval and is the only hemodynamic support device proven safe and effective for this patient population.
