Florida Keys icon becomes a new destination in winter 2014/2015
Marathon, Florida (PRWEB) September 09, 2014 -- One of the Florida Keys’ most iconic destinations in family friendly Marathon is coming back to life: The Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club, set to open in December.
Located on the same land as the former resort and a marina destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, the new resort - set around a125-room Hyatt Place hotel - will provide a new destination midway along the Florida Keys.
“Faro Blanco is and will be the jewel of Marathon that everybody will be able to enjoy,” said Dick Ramsay, the mayor of Marathon who has fond memories of the former resort.
Visitors driving from Key West or Miami won’t be able to miss the Hyatt Place hotel and marina because its namesake - the beloved Faro Blanco lighthouse - stands out on the horizon against the Keys’ famous blue skies. The landmark lighthouse is painted white with a memorable red stripe.
Today, the Faro Blanco resort is rapidly rising next to the lighthouse on the tranquil Gulf of Mexico side of the Keys at Mile Marker 48, about an hour north of Key West. For generations, it has attracted people who love the Florida Keys’ sun and beaches, fishing, boating and diving scenes and its laid-back atmosphere. Children have fun looking for manta rays, dolphins and other sea life, as well as checking out local attractions such as the Turtle Hospital, Dolphin Research Center and the new Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters.
When it opens, the new Faro Blanco resort will feature an upscale Hyatt Place hotel with complimentary breakfast buffet, two pools, a fitness center, meeting space and free high speed Wi-Fi, as well as a waterfront restaurant with a terrace and outdoor bar called the Lighthouse Grill.
For boaters, the resort is being designed with a 74-slip, state-of-the-art marina capable of handling vessels up to 100 feet in length. Boaters can dock overnight, stop for fuel or use Faro Blanco as their home port. There will be 24-hour security, a marine store, marine concierge services, Wi-Fi and lockers with showers.
The Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club is being developed by the Spottswood Cos., a Key West-based real estate and hospitality firm that also owns other hotels in the Florida Keys.
The resort is coming to life at an exciting time in Marathon’s history.
Another landmark - the 102-year-old Old Seven Mile Bridge, called “Old Seven” by the locals - will soon undergo a major rehabilitation. Completed in 1912, the famous bridge was once considered an engineering marvel that rivaled the Panama Canal and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
And on Feb. 15, 2015, the Florida Keys Marathon Airport will become an international port of entry for passengers, giving more people the ability to fly directly to the area, Ramsay said.
