Florida Poly Successfully Wraps Up First Academic Year
LAKELAND, Fla. (PRWEB) April 30, 2015 -- Students at Florida Polytechnic University take their final exams this week, marking the end of the school’s first academic year and a number of historic achievements.
In just nine short months, Florida Poly’s inaugural class accomplished several “firsts,” including selecting the Phoenix as the University’s official mascot, building a student government, creating recreational clubs and activities, experiencing immersive hands-on learning opportunities, conducting research, working alongside nearly 90 industry partners, and generating products with patent potential.
“I am so proud of our remarkable students who actively shaped campus culture while engaging in Florida Poly’s rigorous, hands-on, industry-inspired academic programs,” said University President Dr. Randy K. Avent. “Students have and will continue to build Florida Poly from the ground up. I’m excited to see the impact the second incoming class will have this fall.”
Students have already developed ideas and product concepts that meet the demands of industry. In December, nine student teams presented their product ideas to an industry panel for noise cancellation systems, wi-fi enhancers and energy harvesting equipment for hikers. The winning teams are now receiving support from Florida Poly to develop their ideas and file for provisional patents. Another University student is also receiving support to pursue a unique 3D printing concept he developed on his own.
Florida Poly will welcome its second class of students in August 2015. Student inquiries up more than 100 percent over last year, and applications are still being accepted.
“This year’s class set a high bar for both academic excellence and student involvement in University activities,” said Director of Student Affairs Dr. Steven S. Warner. “I’m confident that our next class will jump right in. That’s just the type of hands-on culture that students have built here at Florida Poly. From the University standpoint, we’ll continue to do all we can to foster innovation, learning and creativity.”
Full-time students attending Florida Poly in the 2015-2016 academic year can once again count on robust scholarships. Amounts will vary from student to student and are based on academic achievements. Most scholarships cover the full cost of tuition for each Financial Aid Year, for four years.
Florida Poly’s luxury, on-campus Residence Hall is also still available for the 2015-2016 academic year. Designed with the modern student in mind, the Residence Hall is comfortable, secure and offers fully furnished three- and four-bedroom suites that have the latest technology and accommodations. Incoming freshman receive priority for this option, located just a two-minute walk from the Innovation, Science and Technology (IST) Building.
“This first academic year really exceeded our expectations in terms of student quality and engagement. Florida Poly is well on its way to becoming a leader in STEM education,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Ghazi Darkazalli. “As we continue to grow and develop our offerings, both in and out of the classroom, I can only imagine what Florida Poly and its students will achieve.”
