Florida Questions Its Spending on Punitive Incarceration in Light of Exorbitant Costs for Non Violent Offenders
Miami, FL (PRWEB) July 30, 2015 -- On July 23rd Clay Today Online reported the state of Florida spends more than $2 billion in taxpayer money to fund the state’s large prison system, which has amassed largely enough throughout the years. Florida is the third state in the country with the highest rates of incarceration. In light of President Obama’s recent reduction of non violent drug offender’s prison sentences, Florida is beginning to take a look at other state’s policies of dealing with non violent offenders, and may be opting in for alternative solutions like drug and veteran courts to treat the underlying causes of the offences- as opposed to incubating offenders to be repeat criminals. Clay Today Online quotes Dominic Calabro, who is the chief exec. of Florida TaxWatch, “There are less costly ways to handle nonviolent offenders. . . in ways that intervene, better manage our resources, and better manage our risk.”
Harbor Village is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center dedicated to helping those with substance use disorders recover and assume lucrative roles in their communities and beyond. The facility asserts treatment as opposed to incarceration ultimately yields results which criminal justice sentences cannot achieve, but seek to in vain. An associate from the treatment facility comments:
“Locking up non violent drug offenders has not done our communities any good, because once they get out they do not know how to govern themselves in any other conduct, because prisons, largely, do not offer societal rehabilitation. Once convicted, it’s almost as if we give up on our prisoners. Drug rehab programs in prison don’t offer the level of specialized treatment to adequately provide treatment for inmates- of which, should not be spending extensive sentences in lieu of overcoming their underlying addictions.
“Our current system not only wastes tax resources, but stains our ability to effectively help those who are entirely capable of making full recoveries, and make meaningful contributions to their communities.”
Harbor Village provides affordable addiction care in Florida and helps those without insurance connect with resources to get help. The facility accepts 88 forms of major insurances, and offers tuition assistance in some cases. Those with untreated drug and alcohol use disorders undergo extensive rehabilitation treatment to redress the underlying causes of addiction. The Florida drug and alcohol rehab center gives clients the opportunity to explore alternative means of expression, and teaches clients how to constructively handle their emotions.
