FloydFest Brings Sustainability Initiatives to the Summer Music Festival Scene
Floyd, VA (PRWEB) April 17, 2014 -- On April 22nd, over 190 countries will celebrate Earth Day as a reminder of the importance of environmental protection and conservation for our planet. From July 23rd – 27th, FloydFest, the summer outdoor music festival near Floyd, VA, will host their own Earth Day celebration – a 5-day, Blue Ridge Mountain staycation filled with music, healing arts, and outdoor adventure. From sustainability workshops, to panel discussions, to healing arts classes, this year’s FloydFest is taking a truly Revolutionary stance on bringing eco-friendly practices to the summer music festival scene.
FloydFest is grateful to call their home base a pristine, 80-acre plateau directly off the Blue Ridge Parkway, and they have gone to great lengths to ensure that the area stays as unspoiled as possible. Since 2011, FloydFest has partnered with Klean Kanteen to provide free drinking water to all festival-goers and produce re-usable, stainless steel cups for attendees to purchase. The initiative has successfully eliminated waste from over 200,000 paper and plastic cups. Throughout the festival, a volunteer “Green Team,” monitors recycling stations, compost piles, and water bottle refill stations that are easily accessible to festival patrons throughout the entire venue. Through the incredible efforts of the Green Team each year, FloydFest has yielded 10.48 tons of recycling and 9 tons of compost that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill.
“We are so fortunate to be able to host FloydFest at such an incredible location,” says festival co-founder Erika Johnson. “We are committed to protecting and preserving the FloydFest grounds and surrounding areas so that attendees can experience their unspoiled beauty for years to come.”
FloydFest attendees are also privy to a wide variety of health and wellness products and services. The festival hosts an on-site Farmer’s Market with fresh, local produce, and many of the on-site food and drink vendors use local and/or organic ingredients. In addition, the “Healing Arts Village” offers a variety of relaxation and rejuvenation services, ranging from meditation classes, to massages, to trapeze lessons. FloydFest also hosts a multitude of workshops and discussion panels, focusing on topics ranging from sustainability issues to environmental concerns within the music industry. Hosted on the picturesque Virginia Folk Life Workshop Porch, FloydFest’s ‘Panel Discussions’ feature renowned speakers, activists, and headlining artists who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and experiences with the FloydFest audience.
“FloydFest is about celebrating the symbiotic relationship between music, art, and the natural world,” says Johnson. “We want the festival to serve as a haven for everyone, from our artists to our audience, to experience, celebrate, and preserve that harmony.”
