Fly Condos, a Unique Property from Empire Communities, Showcased on Archello.com
Toronto, Ontario (PRWEB) May 09, 2014 -- Award-winning Ontario homebuilder Empire Communities announced today that the Fly Condos, a unique property located in a vibrant neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, was recently showcased in a feature on the architecture website Archello.com.
The Fly Condos is a breathtaking, 24-story glass and stone tower with an impressive lobby dominated by three faceted mirrored glass columns. Each of the three columns stands 33 feet tall, and is clad with forty faceted glass panels. Each of the panels consists of two panes of glass, one with a mirrored back and another that is clear, both bonded together by a translucent green epoxy. The engineering drawings of the facets were based on a 3D model designed by Munge Leung, but restricted by the maximum available glass sizes.

Eventscape, Inc. recently released a video demonstrating the complex process behind the installation of the columns. The columns were originally just plain, structural concrete columns before they were clad in the special mirrored glass panels through a four step process.
First, the columns were encased in a steel frame to provide a base for the glass panels. Then, a plywood substructure was applied to the metal frame in order to establish angles. The panels themselves were bonded to identical plywood panels with engineer-specified high-bond adhesive, and mounted to the plywood template on the columns with aluminum brackets. The installation required special lifting devices to be used, since the columns were so close to the glass curtain wall on the exterior of the building.
