End-to-end encryption uses specialized credit card swipes to encrypt the credit card at the point of swipe. This encrypted credit card can only be decrypted by the processor, rendering it worthless to any attacker. With end-to-end encryption there is no longer any need to store credit cards in the POS database, so there is nothing in the POS for hackers to steal. Removing credit card storage from the POS also significantly decreases the PCI-DSS responsibilities of the merchant, giving them a much easier path to compliance.
