There are many advantages to living in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Forbes noted that these benefits have put the city at the top of these rankings for many years. Among the chief perks, the economy in Raleigh has seen noticeable growth, particularly as a result of the financial services, software and energy sectors. Additionally, income levels are increasing while crime is low, and the city has high-quality schools.
Grand Rapids, Michigan, held the No. 2 spot, following its seat at the top in the 2012 rankings. The low crime rate is accompanied by short commute times, the country's highest percentage of homeowners (77 percent) and a low cost of living.
Ogden, Utah, has the largest spread between median household income and cost of living. Furthermore, the city has one of the lowest crime rates in the U.S.
At No. 4 was Omaha, Nebraska. The city has one of the lowest costs of living and has the third-largest percentage of residents owning their homes.
Youngstown, Ohio, took the fifth spot despite years of an economic downturn. It bounced back from ranking on Forbes' 2013 "Most Miserable Cities" list due to low costs of living, quality schools, a low crime rate and short commutes outside the city proper. Income, however, is still suffering the effects of the downturn.
Des Moines, Iowa, boasts short commutes, low crime and a significant spread between median household income and cost of living.
If you're looking for outdoor entertainment for your family - such as kayaking and mountain biking - Boise, Idaho, is the place to buy. Education quality and low rates of crime both rank in the top five, and income and cost of living are favorable.
Affordable housing is easy to find in Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. In addition to requiring less financing from a low cost mortgage, the cities provide short commutes and have low rates of crime.
Cincinnati residents are afforded one of the lowest costs of living compared to other large metro areas. The city's schools are in the top 10 among the 100 largest metro areas, and median household income is on par with the national average.
Provo, Utah, rounds out the list with quality schools, high income and low rates of crime.
