Ford/Forlano - Featuring New Work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, November 7-10
Philadelphia,PA and Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) October 29, 2013 -- The Philadelphia Craft Show is a long running cultural highlight of the year; an essential part of autumn in Philadelphia. Top collectors in the city, as well as from around the country, come to the gala opening to be the first to see the best craft pieces. Known as one of the top 5 encyclopedic art museums in the US, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has one of the few curators in the country specializing in contemporary craft. Elisabeth Agro's position was funded to honor one of the Craft Show's longtime supporters, Nancy McNeil. The Craft Show has also been the museum's single largest fundraising event for the last 37 years. The show runs from November 7 -10, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The highly competitive jury process selects the best from over 1,000 applicants to be included in this premier show and sale. A special feature of this Craft Show, the Guest Artist Program, selects and highlights craft from a single country selected each year. Countries that have participated include Japan, Ireland, Germany, Finland, Israel, Korea and more. This year, patrons will have the opportunity to see, buy and experience craft made by twenty-three of the finest contemporary Lithuanian artists.
Steve Ford and David Forlano, aka Ford/Forlano, will be showing new jewelry for the 16th time at this prestigious event. The duo first started collaborating while still in art school at Temple University's Rome program in 1984, where they shared studio space. For the last 25 years, they've continued their collaboration by making innovative art jewelry, working side by side until 2005, when Forlano moved to Santa Fe. Now their collaboration continues long distance shipping work back and forth across the country until both agree that a piece is resolved and ready to show the public. Each time that they've shown at the Philadelphia Craft Show, Steve Ford and David Forlano stretch themselves to create some of their most unique work and reserve it specifically for this prestigious event. David Forlano says, “We have learned over the years that this show is attended by some of the most sophisticated art and craft buyers in the country and we can push the creative envelope.”
The work of Ford/Forlano is in the permanent collections of 8 museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Newark Museum. Acting Director and Chief Curator of the Newark Museum, Ulysses Dietz, said recently, "Steven Ford and David Forlano's work represents, to me, the single most transformative influence in the world of polymer clay. They have ennobled a material relegated to preschools and have developed a design vocabulary as deeply rooted in modern art as it is in craft."
Their schedule of top tier shows continues in the Spring 2014 with the Smithsonian Craft show at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C, CraftBoston at the Cyclorama, and the American Craft Council show in Baltimore.
