Forever Redwood Company Chosen to Manufacture a Bench From President Obama to Chinese President Xi at the Sunnylands Summit
Annapolis, California (PRWEB) July 29, 2013 -- Concluding a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Sunnylands Annenberg Estate on June 8, 2013, President Barack Obama presented his fellow statesman with a bench made from redwood and engraved in English and Chinese to symbolize the friendship between the two nations.
The bench was made from a giant (12 feet in diameter) reclaimed, Old-Growth Redwood log cut from a 1,300 year old tree that had been lying on the forest floor for over 50 years. The extraordinary longevity of the Redwoods underscored a key summit topic: combating climate change and reducing the production of greenhouse gases.
“We were honored to be selected to handcraft the Presidential gift bench for this historic summit,” said Warren Linney, Director of Forever Redwood. “Two out of the three redwood species are native to the U.S., and the other one is native to China. This shared biological inheritance weaves our two worlds together.”
“This fact was part of the symbolic consideration of the gift along with Redwood’s key role in storing carbon and stabilizing climate change,” explained Linney. The California Coastal Redwood forest is the largest carbon sink per acre in the world. At the summit, U.S. and China agreed to work together to phase down HFCs--potent greenhouse gases. “We are pleased with the subsequent U.S. and China CO2 agreements and with President Obama’s Climate Speech on June 23rd, 2013,” said Linney. “Reducing CO2 in the atmosphere is aligned with Forever Redwood’s global mission of helping to restore clear cut forests,” said Linney.
