Former Congressman Albert Wynn to Moderate Panel at University of Maryland’s Parren J. Mitchell Symposium
WASHINGTON (PRWEB) April 24, 2017 -- Former Congressman Albert Wynn, now a Senior Director in the Government Law & Policy Practice at global law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, will moderate a panel discussion at the 4th Annual Parren J. Mitchell Symposium, “Truth & Lies: Race, Media, and Politics,” April 26, 2017. The Critical Race Initiative, the Department of Sociology, and College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland (UMD) will host the day-long event.
The symposium celebrates the legacy of Parren J. Mitchell, the late Congressman who was the first African-American to attend graduate school and receive his Master’s in Sociology from UMD. This yearly event creates dialogue at the intersection of education, political activism, and interest in social change.
Wynn will moderate the symposium’s third panel discussion, “The Politics of Racial Representation,” with Kevin Blackistone, sports journalist and Philip Merrill College of Journalism Professor; Carmen Lugo-Lugo, Washington State University Professor; Matthew Hughey, University of Connecticut Associate Professor; and Janelle Wong, UMD’s Asian American Studies Program Director— all experts on media, politics, and race. The panel is set to “examine what the public sees, what they hear, and why it matters.” Further, the panelists will discuss racial representation related to current events and their far-reaching implications.
Wynn is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Maryland’s 4th Congressional District. While in the House, he served on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, most recently as Chairman of its Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials, and as a member of the Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality. While on the Energy and Commerce Committee, Wynn also served on the Health and Telecommunications Subcommittees. In the early part of his congressional career, he was a member of the Financial Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee. He was appointed a Senior Democratic Whip and served as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee (PAC).
