A total of 3,399 people died in motor vehicle accidents in Texas in 2012, according to the Killeen Daily Herald, “Automobile fatality rates increasing on roadways” (Jan. 2, 2014). That figure represents an increase of 332 deaths or 10.8 percent compared to 2011, when 3,067 people died in traffic accidents in Texas, the Killeen Daily Herald reported based on statistics compiled by the Texas Department of Transportation.
In contrast, the number of traffic fatalities in many states nationwide declined in 2013, according to The Washington Post. Specifically, the number of people who died in auto accidents in Iowa, Ohio, New Jersey, South Carolina and Wyoming approached record lows for each state, The Washington Post reported.

A total of 45 percent of people killed in traffic accidents were not wearing seatbelts. And 52 percent of people who died in motorcycle accidents were not wearing helmets. These are numbers we can do something about. These statistics should be much lower.”
