Foster Farms Chicken Linked to Salmonella Scare: New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Warns Consumers
New York, NY (PRWEB) October 30, 2013 -- Government officials are warning consumers about a strain of salmonella found in raw chicken produced by Foster Farms, which may have made 278 people ill in 18 states. According to an Oct. 8 news report in The New York Times, food safety officials are asking consumers to cook all chicken to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees to make sure that the bacteria are destroyed. The report also states that this is a strain of salmonella that is resistant to antibiotics.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2010, public health departments had reported 1,527 foodborne disease outbreaks resulting in 29,444 cases of illness, 1,184 hospitalizations and 23 deaths. Among the 790 outbreaks, norovirus was the most commonly reported infection accounting for 42 percent of the outbreaks followed by salmonella, with 30 percent of the outbreaks. Salmonella also caused the most outbreak-related hospitalizations – nearly 50 percent -- the CDC reports.
New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm , who represents victims of food poisoning, says it is important that consumers take all the necessary precautions. "Please remember, when you eat at a restaurant or get served in a cafeteria, you have no control over how the meat is prepared," he said. "When an individual gets food poisoning as a result of contamination caused by negligence, he or she has legal rights."
Wilhelm says food poisoning victims suffer physically, emotionally and financially. "In case of salmonella poisoning, the symptoms are painful and violent. Victims may have to be hospitalized and become extremely weak as a result of the infection. It could take several months for an individual to return completely to normal after a salmonella infection."
Food producers, processers and servers can be held liable for illnesses and injuries caused by contaminated food, Wilhelm says. "Injured victims can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, diagnostic tests, permanent injuries, disabilities and even past and future pain and suffering. It is also important that victims report their illness to their local healthcare agency so it can be documented."
