FOTO, Inc. Announces New Risk Adjustment Models for Orthopedic and Pelvic Floor Conditions

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is demanding more scientifically rigorous approaches to risk adjustment. Value-based healthcare will require providers and payers to align quality and financial incentives through payment model advances such as new Medicare Quality Payment Program (QPP). In an April 5 presentation on Episode-Based Cost Measure Development, Medicare identified risk adjustment as one of the five essential cost measure components to improve quality patient care.
“Meaningful comparisons of outcomes cannot be made without risk-adjustment,” said Al Amato, PT, MBA, FOTO President. “FOTO is continuously improving risk adjustment to account for factors outside the clinician’s control that can influence outcomes and help avoid penalizing clinicians treating more complex or less healthy patients.”

The new models build on the past by adding new categories to help factor in the multitudes of variables that influence outcomes of patient care that are beyond the clinician’s control: previous treatment, post-surgery type, use of medication, exercise habits, payer categories, and the relative influence of up to 30 comorbidities. Two webinars will be offered on the new risk adjustment models on April 27 or May 2.
