Foundation for Women's Cancer Announces 2014 Recipient of Claudia Cohen Research Foundation Prize for Outstanding Gynecologic Cancer Researcher
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) March 24, 2014 -- The Foundation for Women’s Cancer and the Claudia Cohen Research Foundation announce today that Dr. Andrew Berchuck has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Foundation for Women’s Cancer/Claudia Cohen Research Foundation Prize for Outstanding Gynecologic Researcher. The $50,000 prize was presented at the Society of Gynecologic Oncology 45th Annual Meeting on Women's Cancer in Tampa.
Dr. Berchuck is the Director of the Duke University Division of Gynecologic Oncology and of the Gynecologic Cancer Program at the Duke Cancer Institute. Dr. Berchuck has had a career-long commitment to research that seeks to understand the causes of endometrial and ovarian cancers at the molecular level. His current research interests focus on the genetic factors tied to ovarian cancer with the hope of being able to determine with more precision those women are at highest risk, leading to better preventive and earlier detection approaches. He was the recipient of the 2006 Margaret Greenfield/Carmel Cohen, MD “Excellence in Ovarian Cancer Prize’” awarded by the Foundation for Women’s Cancer.
Each year more than 90,000 women will be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer and about 28,000 will die from these cancers. Gynecologic cancers include cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar cancers.

The prize is funded by the Claudia Cohen Research Foundation in honor of Claudia Cohen, who lost her battle with uterine leiomyosarcoma in 2007. Ms. Cohen was a highly respected journalist and philanthropist. The Claudia Cohen Research Foundation was founded by Ms. Cohen's daughter Samantha Perelman, with her sister Caleigh, to foster research aimed at reducing the burden of gynecologic cancer.

The Claudia Cohen Prize for Outstanding Gynecologic Researcher is one of six prizes, five ovarian cancer grants and one endometrial research grant announced during the SGO Annual Meeting.
Since announcing its first grant in 1995, the Foundation for Women’s Cancer has awarded 105 research grants, totaling more than $5.4 million. Its research program targets promising young researchers who often receive their initial research funding from the Foundation.
