Four Allegheny Health Network Employees Receive the 2014 EMS Champion Award
Pittsburgh, PA. (PRWEB) June 27, 2014 -- Four Allegheny Health Network employees are among the 2014 EMS Champions recognized by the Allegheny County EMS Council. They are Lori Davis, EMS Dispatcher at Jefferson Hospital; Dan Schwartz, MD, EMS Medical Director at Forbes Hospital; Lori Shotts, RN, High Risk Care Team at Allegheny Valley Hospital, and Bob Twaddle, Manager, Prehospital Care Services at Forbes Hospital. The awards were presented at the EMS Council's Annual Meeting June 12 at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association.
The EMS Champion Award recognizes individuals or groups whose dedication has not only outstanding merit, but is exemplary within the Emergency Medical Services profession. Awardees are recognized for performing an outstanding task that changed an ill or injured person’s outcome, working to improve EMS’s ability to provide care to the sick or injured, showing personal commitment and growth in an extraordinary way, providing unique patient care interaction, improving their EMS Service or community through EMS-related activities or functions, and advancing the development of EMS as a profession.
“All four awardees went, and continue to go, above and beyond required expectations to serve the public and their patients,” says Robert McCaughan, vice president, prehospital care services, Allegheny Health Network. “We benefit greatly from their contribution to advancements in the field. Not only are they generating a positive impact on patient outcomes, but they are making a difference outside the walls of the hospitals as well.”
The winners are:
• Lori Davis, nominated for her overall assistance to all EMS crews at Jefferson Hospital, going above and beyond her duties to help and welcome the crews. She has worked at Jefferson Hospital since 2003 and has served as the Team Leader in its Communications Center since late 2003.
• Daniel S. Schwartz, MD, honored for his major impact on the clinical care offered under his direction. He has introduced a number of elevated clinical skills including advanced airway management and the use of orogastric tubes. His response to and presence at emergency scenes has made a positive impact on patient outcomes. He also holds the rank of Major in the United States Army Reserves and recently returned from a deployment in Afghanistan.
• Lori Shotts, RN, recognized for her vision that created a new opportunity for EMS to improve health and wellness in the Allegheny Valley. She was instrumental in integrating paramedicine into the High Risk Care Team at Allegheny Valley Hospital, and the team is now known as the Mobile Integrated Health Care Team, with an expanded focus and role. With paramedics involved, the team has moved beyond transporting sick patients to the hospital, staying in contact with high-risk patients with phone calls and home visits.
• Robert Twaddle, EMT-P, CMTE, nominated for his successful efforts to help victims of a tragic mass stabbing that occurred at Franklin Regional High School in April. Twaddle’s decisions in staffing the unit and responding to the event, as well as the excellent care that was provided at the scene and en route to Forbes Hospital, all contributed to the patients’ survival.
