Dublin, CA (PRWEB) April 17, 2017 -- The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, the only authorized OSHA Training Institute Education Center headquartered in Northern California, is announcing that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has scheduled the fourth annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction for May 8-12, 2017. The Safety Stand-Down is a nationwide voluntary event designed to encourage construction industry employers to take a break during the workday to talk directly to employees about fall hazards and to reinforce the importance of fall prevention.
“Fatalities due to falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction workers, accounting for 350 of the 937 construction fatalities in 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,” said Cari Elofson, Assistant Director of the OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District. “The National Safety Stand-Down provides an opportunity to raise fall hazard awareness across the country in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries in the construction industry.”
Any organization interested in preventing falls in the workplace can participate in the National Safety Stand-Down. Past participants have included commercial construction companies of all sizes, residential construction contractors, sub- and independent contractors, highway construction companies, general industry employers, the U.S. Military, other government participants, unions, employer's trade associations, institutes, employee interest organizations and safety equipment manufacturers.
Employers are encouraged to plan a Stand-Down event that best fits their workplace schedule during the week of May 8-12, 2017. Suggestions for effective safety activities include toolbox talks, safety equipment inspections, development of rescue plans or discussions focused on specific hazards at their worksites. To guide their efforts, OSHA has developed an official National Safety Stand-Down webpage to provide information on how to conduct a successful stand-down as well as resources to support workplace events. After their stand-down activities, employers are invited to provide feedback to OSHA and receive a personalized certificate of participation.
