Fourth of July in Houston Will Lead to Increased DWI Checkpoints, Arrests According to the DWI Attorneys at Corso Law Group

The Houston law firm points to 2014, when several Harris County law enforcement agencies joined forces to prevent drunk driving related accidents in Houston. The Harris County Sheriff's Office had help from Baytown, Pasadena, La Porte, Jersey Village, Tomball, Galena Park, Bellaire, and Jacinto City police departments, and all eight Constable Precinct Offices during the Fourth of July weekend last year, which led to a steep increase in DWI arrests compared with the year before, according to Click 2 Houston.
As a result, nearly 200 drivers were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving over the holiday weekend, ABC 13 reports.
“Police know that Houstonians will be drinking on the Fourth of July,” said Christopher P. It’s a dangerous time to be on the road, which is why police are increasing their patrols and DUI checkpoints in high-risk areas.”
In 2013, Harris County alone arrested 29 individuals on suspicion of DWI, the Houston Chronicle reports, but with reinforcements from around Houston in 2014, law enforcement agencies made a total of 192 DWI-related arrests.
Texas DWI laws are strict, with mandatory jail time, large fines and alcohol monitoring devices like SCRAM bracelets are required for repeat and even first-time DWI offenders.
“Texas has zero tolerance for intoxicated driving, and the laws here reflect that mentality,” Corso said. “It’s a dangerous offense that can cause serious harm to both the driver and anyone in the area.”
