The FreedomCase’s innovative folding system allows any Microsoft Surface tablet to be used at multiple angles, ranging from flat to 70 degrees. It is compatible with Surface Touch and Type keyboard covers and integrates with the tablet’s kickstand.
Filling a gap in the Microsoft Surface accessory ecosystem for a well-designed, functional cover, the FreedomCase removes the limitations Surface users have for where and when they can use their tablet.
According to user research, one of the largest pain points of Microsoft Surface owners is the limited range that the tablet’s kickstand provides. This creates limitations on areas where the Surface can be placed and used comfortably, especially with the Surface Touch and Type keyboard covers deployed or while using the onscreen keyboard.
With Microsoft aiming to increase the “lapability” of its tablets, the FreedomCase enhances that capability and provides a more stable platform for use on softer or uneven surfaces.
“After I bought my Surface Pro 2, I realized it was difficult to use other than while sitting at a desk -- even then the angles that the kickstand allowed were a bit too steep,” says the FreedomCase creator, Christopher Leung.
“I created my first prototype and gathered lots of feedback from the Microsoft Surface community. The design was refined over many months, and the response has been overwhelming,” continued Leung. “We are excited to bring the product to market through Kickstarter.”
Adding very little bulk was a key consideration during the design process. The FreedomCase offers a low profile option for Surface owners, coming in at 3 millimeters thick (less than 1/8th inch) and 10 ounces. Integration with the kickstand is provided by a patent-pending fitted pocket, so no extra volume is added through attachment mechanisms.
The exterior is composed of a durable polyurethane compound, with an additional model offered in polyurethane leather. Interior protection is provided by brushed microfiber suede, and integrated internal ABS plastic panels add high impact resistance. Hidden rare-earth magnets keep the FreedomCase closed and in position as an adjustable stand.
At launch, the FreedomCase is featured in black, with plans to introduce color variations designed to match Surface Touch and Type keyboard cover colors if the Kickstarter campaign is successful.
“We’re confident people will appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into the design,” said Leung. “We hope to bring the FreedomCase to more Windows tablets in the future, as we feel Windows tablet owners have been severely underserved in this area.”
The FreedomCase is compatible with the Microsoft Surface RT, Surface Pro, Surface 2, and Surface Pro 2. It has been accepted into the Microsoft Designed for Surface program, meaning it has been made to the exact specifications of Surface tablets.
