Fresh Coat Painters Gives Back to Founder of Reba’s Vision
Glendale, AZ (PRWEB) April 13, 2016 -- When Reba Mason got the news that her breast cancer had spread and was terminal, she went home and cried. After 27 treatments, she had thought the cancer was behind her. Then she woke up at 2am empowered by a dream – she wanted to do everything she could to eradicate cancer. That passion led her start a fund to help women in need get free 3D Mammograms and to provide Baskets of Hope to cancer patients. Since her diagnosis in September of 2014, Reba has raised almost $60,000 for those projects.
On April 4, Fresh Coat of Glendale, the professional painting company locally owned by JT Trainor, painted the entire interior of Reba’s house to say thank you for all of her hard work and dedication. The project was part of Fresh Coat Painters’ national Paint it Forward® project, an initiative to brighten up the homes or offices of those that deserve a fresh space across the country.
Fresh Coat of Glendale offers residential and commercial painting services including interior and exterior painting, wood staining and finishing, and other services for nearly every protective coating application. Fresh Coat of Glendale serves Glendale, Peoria, Sun City, Arrowhead Ranch and the surrounding areas. Trainor said he was excited to be able to do something to help Mason start her life in her new home.
“Reba has full-blown cancer and, despite her own diagnosis and treatment, she finds the energy to do so much for others and she brings a true passion to that work. Her drive is amazing and we are so honored to have the opportunity to say thank you,” Fresh Coat of Glendale owner JT Trainor said.
The painting would have cost approximately $4,300 if not for Paint it Forward. With Paint it Forward, Fresh Coat provides the expertise and man-hours and the paint is donated by the company’s national paint partner, Sherwin-Williams®.
Reba’s work started immediately after 2014 diagnosis that her cancer had spread and she had, at best, five years to live. She met with the team at Banner Lakes Imaging to discuss how she could help provide additional 3D Mammography access to women who were uninsured or whose insurance wouldn’t cover the high-tech scan.
“The charge for the test is approximately $165, but I know from personal experience that, when you are fighting cancer, you might not have $165. When I went through treatment the first time I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I lost everything, including my insurance. Having that 3D scan can help people at risk for breast cancer to spot cancer cells two or three years sooner. That can be the difference between life and death,” she said. “I started selling those little rubber wrist bands for $5 and asking the community for donations.”
While she was out asking for donations, Reba also requested movie passes, gift cards and small life essentials she could put together to put into what she called Baskets of Hope, which she delivers to people receiving cancer treatment in the West Valley.
“On top of all the expenses, it seems like your every waking moment is filled with doctor appointments, tests and treatment. It takes a physical and emotional toll. Being able to take that gift card and escape to a movie for a few hours can really have a positive impact,” Reba said. “I do all of this because I don’t want other people to go through what I’ve been through and what I’m facing. I want to make a difference in people’s lives. That’s the legacy – other than my children – that I want to leave behind.”
The two programs, in less than a year and a half, have raised almost $60,000. As for the 3D Mammography services, more than 30 women have been able to use technology thanks to what Reba named the Pink Roadhouse Mammography Fund. That 3D technology is also now available at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in addition to Banner Imaging Center.
Reba was nominated for the whole house painting by Regina Sheets at Banner Health. Regina wanted to recognize Reba for the work she’s been able to do and celebrate Reba’s upcoming wedding and new house.
“Reba Mason is a true Texas tornado on a whirlwind mission, funneling her energy into making women aware of the importance of getting regular screening mammograms, especially the significantly more accurate 3D mammograms. She also creates beautiful baskets filled with items to help patients get through rough days. Reba is an extraordinary woman and I don’t know how she does it. She runs circles around me despite all she’s going through – she’s definitely my hero,” Regina said.
“Now that Reba has a chance at some happiness, I thought it would be great if Fresh Coat could help her and her fiancé freshen up their new home. Cancer will never squelch her spirit and she deserves to be recognized,” she added.
Reba said they’re still getting settled into the house, but that the place really suits their style now that it has a fresh coat of paint.
“I call it a home now not just a house it has so many touches of me and of my new husband Steve. We are so truly blessed and in love with the house. The painters were amazing and the house is so beautiful - it is beyond words. I cannot express my gratitude to Fresh Coat Painters and JT Trainor for what they have done they have turned my house into the most beautiful home I can imagine,” Reba said.
Paint It Forward was inspired by Eric Ascencio, previous co-owner of a Fresh Coat Painters franchise in Houston, Texas. Eric had made it his mission to be an inspiration for other cancer patients and to give back to those in his community, leaving behind a legacy when he recently lost his battle with the disease.
