Fresh Water Advocate Sharon Kleyne Warns to Be Extra Cautious About Dry Eye “Hot Spot” Cities In Hot Dry Summer of 2015
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) July 30, 2015 -- Summer is the dry eye season, especially in parts of the country identified as “dry eye hot spots.”* Add to that a particularly long, dry and hot 2015 summer season and the dry eye rate in the hot spots and elsewhere could skyrocket. Radio host and fresh water advocate Sharon Kleyne will discuss the 2015 summer season and identify the primary dry eye hot spots on her upcoming Sharon Kleyne Hour™ Power of Water® radio show. Complaints related to dry eye, a condition caused primarily by accelerated water content evaporation in the eye’s basal tear film, says Kleyne, are the number one reason for United States Ophthalmologist visits. The surface of the eyes is 99 percent water and losing only 2 percent of that water can result in dry eye symptoms such as itching and burning eyes, blurred vision, watery eyes, red eyes, headache and fatigue.
Cities topping the Hot Spot list, according to Kleyne, have in common a combination of: (1) warm temperatures that make surface water – and tear film water - more likely to evaporate, (2) a dry, low humidity climate making the atmosphere more receptive to evaporated water, (2) air pollution, (3) air stagnation, (4) wind, (5) altitude (low is better), (4) high levels of eye allergens.
The Dry Eye Hot Spot list, says Kleyne, is headed by a city in Nevada (Las Vegas), followed by four cities in Texas (Lubbock, El Paso, Midland/Odessa and Dallas/Fort Worth), cities in Arizona (Phoenix) and Utah (Salt Lake City), another Texas city (Amarillo), and Honolulu, Hawaii. The only Eastern city in the top ten is Atlanta, Georgia at #6. Several Central Valley cities in California ranked fairly high (Bakersfield was #1 in California, #19 overall). Los Angeles, despite the nation’s worst air quality, ranked only 63rd. Los Angeles experiences ocean breezes, fairly mild temperatures and has fewer allergenic plants.
Other high risk environments for dry eye include indoor areas with forced-air heating and air conditioning and insulated walls and windows, airline cabins, high glare places such as ski slopes and the ocean, any activity that causes one to blink less often (computers top this list), any activity or location that causes excessive perspiration, places with cigarette smoke, and other un-ventilated areas with airborne smoke or chemicals. Contact lenses, car vents, certain medications, hair dryers, certain foods and certain illnesses can also dehydrate the eyes. Being in a dry eye hot spot city increases the risk.
To avoid dehydration, Sharon Kleyne recommends drinking at least eight glasses of water a day in addition to all other fluids. Be aware of household humidity and take corrective measures if it falls below 50%. Also, get enough sleep, avoid prolonged glare, don’t forget to blink, and bathe regularly.
