Friendship Village of Schaumburg Honored Dr. Martin Luther King's Legacy With A Day of Service
Schaumburg, IL (PRWEB) January 21, 2016 -- On Monday, January 18th, Friendship Village of Schaumburg honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King through a day of service. Residents and staff of the retirement community made more than 225 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and then assembled brown bag lunches which included a handwritten note of inspiration. These were distributed to Journeys: The Road Home in Arlington Heights, the Elgin Community Crisis Center, and the Barn Senior Center in Schaumburg.
“Dr. King is quoted as having said ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?’ This is how we answered that question while paying tribute to this inspirational man,” said Jeannette Magdaleno, lifelong learning and volunteer coordinator for Friendship Village. “What better way to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy than through volunteerism? If Dr. King were here today, he would urge us to lend a hand and work together to help those in need, not just today but throughout the year. And that’s actually what residents of Friendship Village do.”
Jeannette explained how Friendship Village residents are very service-oriented and spend much of their time year-round, giving back to their community. “They volunteer at Children’s Home and Aid, local schools and hospitals, packing food at Feed My Starving Children, mentoring developmentally disabled young adults and crocheting sleeping mats for the homeless from plastic bags,” she said. In a way, we’re actually paying tribute to Dr. King’s commitment to service, every single day.”
