A social enterprise founded by Akin Disu with the aim to impact the planet for good. Popbeachclub have created a lifestyle following on social media, and are about to move to the next stage scaling the business. They are raising funds via the crowdfunding platform indiegogo to meet the minimum order requirements to buy certified recycled polyester for use in the production of the first batch of board-shorts
"On the beach we are surrounded by clever and bright kids who are innocent of the challenges life will throw in their paths because of a lack of a basic education. They are being overwhelmed by the plastic deposited twice a day by the tides. It is ruining their environment and stealing their livelihood by killing the fish in the ocean we felt compelled to act " said Akin Disu
Popbeachclub decided to make a change by developing a sustainable model which did not rely on charity or government funding. 3 years ago they began making limited-edition African wax print shorts, waterproofed using an artisanal method they formulated themselves. A fixed percentage of sales from the merchandise goes to fund the schools in the area.
They had a great deal of success with the brand and in the first year built a classroom. It was a simple structure that doubled the intake of the school, all the kids in the village could now attend classes.This had a great effect on the morale of the teachers, the parents were pleased, and the school became a point of pride in the community. In the second year they updated the furniture.
This process proved hard to scale, and it didn't address the issue of plastic pollution on the beach.
Current estimates state that by 2025 there shall be 1 ton of plastic to 3 tons of fish in the oceans, and by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish at the current rate of pollution
This project creates a platform to address the problems of plastic proliferation killing the oceans and the low literacy rates coming out of Africa Indiegogo
Consumers globally need to demand major clothing manufacturers use recycled polyester this will have a great impact on the level of plastic waste sent to the oceans and land fills
Education is part of the basic human rights agreed on by the United Nations charter on community development goals. Africa has a very young population, a high birth rate, and a modest per capita gross domestic product, this has lead to an appalling child literacy rate. An educated population is a great asset to the human race, China has one of the highest literacy rates in the world and is an excellent example of this.
