Fundamental Changes Ahead for Electric Utility Software
Chattanooga, Tennessee (PRWEB) August 21, 2013 -- Leaders across the electric utility industry are coming together in Washington, DC for the inaugural meeting of GOSSA on September 6, 2013. Open source software (OSS) is revolutionizing every aspect of our digitally dependent world, and GOSSA provides a structured and coordinated industry wide entity to foster and facilitate OSS specifically for electric power companies. The meeting is hosted at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, and will include speakers from the US Department of Energy, the Institute for Defense Analyses, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, the Electric Power Research Institute, NRECA, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, the PJM Interconnection, and the Grid Protection Alliance. The electric power industry lags behind other industries such as government, healthcare, and finance, in the adoption of open source applications.
GOSSA, founded in 2013, is a not-for-profit corporation formed to foster and facilitate the use of OSS in the electric utility industry. GOSSA provides an institutional approach to organizing, managing, and disseminating OSS tools and brings all sectors of the utility industry together in a framework for improved collaboration.
